Black Beauty
To my dear and honored Mother, whose life, no less than her pen, has been devoted to the welfare of others, this little book is affectionately dedicated.
Anna Sewell
Preface
The story is written from the point of view of a high-bred horse named Black Beauty. The story starts with his happy, playful days as a colt on an old English farm and spans all the way to his hard-working days pulling a London cab to his long-awaited retirement in the country!
During all this time he encounters a lot of cruelty and kindness. The chapters are short and each one details an incident in Black Beauty's life that depicts a moral lesson of treating horses with kindness and understanding rather than cruelty and indifference.
Anna Sewell's detailed observations and descriptions made this book an immediate best-seller. Anna lived just long enough to see this book become a success. It was her first and only novel! Anna wrote this novel with a special purpose in mind: "its special aim being to induce kindness, sympathy, and an understanding treatment of horses"
Give it to your parents, friends and colleagues!
